Overview
At 300 square feet, this is a very small but important computer room in the heart of the hospital. The hospital facility must maintain 100% uptime due to the critical nature of the services provided. For this kind of reliability, the best solution is redundancy at the weakest link.
In a mission critical facility, the two weakest links are the HVAC system and the battery back-up. Each of these represents a single point of failure without some form of duplication.
Solution
For the HVAC, simple duplication is required. Two identical, isolated, air-cooled air conditioners, each capable of sustaining the heat load in the room, provide the required reliability.
For the battery back-up, the UPS system chosen includes 11 minutes of internal batteries. In order to obtain redundancy, it was necessary to add a second, parallel string of batteries. Not only does this provide redundancy, but also significant increase to the UPS back-up time in the event of an issue with the hospital's emergency diesel generator.
